More about the retreat

During our weekend, through formal daily practices and break out sessions/discussion, we will explore and map out what sustainable, embodied practice requires of us AND promises us in return. We will honor and acknowledge the real and perceived obstacles to our practice and create ritual that ushers us through the resistance. We will relish down time and the quiet vast space that fosters healing and insight.

We will explore the stories we carry writ large in our bodies (thoughts, emotions, patterns, and relations) and how our daily practice can be used to revise and rewrite our experience of Self, relationship, and the world.

Our sadhana and our embodied stories are deeply interconnected. We will use this weekend to consider the embodied interplay of the cardinal elements (earth, water, fire, air, and ether) and how they can guide and deepen your sense of Self. Get versed in your innate experience of the chakras (energetic centers) and the vayus (movements of prana, the life force) in asana and beyond. Learn how yogic cosmology and the 8-limb Path of Patanjali’s Yoga Sutra can give you tools to shift your daily experience. Discover which breath patterns, foci, and postures stoke the fires and which ones cool them, how to protect your waters or elevate your energy, and what to do in response to anxiety, depression, heartbreak, or stress. Skillfully challenge yourself to go beyond old stories/conclusions that you have taken as “truth” for too long. And, most importantly in our busy lives, give yourself the opportunity to restore, rest, and return to your original state by letting go of the efforts. From contractive and expansive, purifying and building, and warming and cooling, to grounding and uplifting, soothing and energizing, this is deep study of practice. We will break things down, and in true yogic spirit, we will weave it all back together in a way that is relevant and meaningful to YOU.

We will also explore eating as a sacred act, creative expression, silence, music, restoration, community, and other rituals of self care. Cultivte daily, weekly, monthly, and seasonal practices to sustain who you are in this world.

This is a retreat designed to inspire and nourish those individuals who wish to go deeper into their embodied, authentic experience (and expression) of Yoga beyond classes and fads, styles or “types.” Join us in sacred space as we dig deeper and make this stuff relevant in your REAL life. You are already a yogi…let’s support that.

More about the location

Nestled at the foot of Mount Princeton, The Fountain Valley School Mountain Campus provides an ideal space for contemplation and elemental inquiry. It’s a magical place, and I am honored to share it with you. It is a quick drive to nearby hot springs and boasts beautiful hiking trails all around.

Lodging is dormitory-style, with new mattresses on bunk beds in a few large open rooms, so plan to bring your bedding (and bring a FRIEND!). Whilst it is rather communal and summer camp-like, there is AMPLE space to spread out (the place sleeps up to 60 people) and have a sense of privacy. There are communal bathrooms (private shower stalls) and private bathrooms–again, plenty of privacy as needed.

You may also choose to camp on the land, given August is typically a very lovely time to be there. More details will be emailed to registrants.

We try to minimize the distractions and trappings (and cost) of fancier accommodations in favor of a beautiful space in the wild that really supports the internal work and quiet inner stillness of a retreat.
